John Horton Murray

BIOGRAPHY

Tenor, John Horton Murray, leading tenor at the Metropolitan Opera, is in increasing demand on the international opera and concert stage. He has sung leading roles with La Scala, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Opera House (Covent Garden), and Lyric Opera of Chicago, to name a few. In orchestra he has appeared as soloist with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Vancouver Symphony and others. He has sung under the baton of such great names as James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Lorin Maazel, Michael Tilson Thomas, the late Sir George Solti, and many more.

Musical composition is another interest of his. He composed the song cycle Sing Beauty commissioned by and set to the lyrics (poetry) of Jack Perkins of A&E Biography fame. He has recently sung at the Metropolitan Opera lead roles in Les Troyens, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Tannhauser. Naxos has released two CDs in which he sings duets and solos from various Wagnerian operas with the Moscow Symphony.
